document.getElementById('winter').innerHTML = " On Friday, February 12, 2003, everyone in the area awoke to find these strange rolls of snow in their yards. I myself walked out and had no idea what had happened. At first I was under the impression that someone had been in the snow. This theory was wrecked as I rounded the corner of our house. Much to my surprise I saw a great many more, and still more on my morning commute to work. As I would find out later, the area had experienced a rare phenomena for Indiana......Snow Rollers.
Snow Rollers are common in the Arctic regions, and are extremely rare in Indiana. A number of conditions must exist for Snow Rollers to be created. First the ground conditions must be frozen or icy enough that newly fallen snow is not able to adhere to the surface. On top of such a surface, clumps of the newly fallen (wet) snow are blown about by strong winds. These clumps that are blown across open fields, or yards, like tumbleweeds. As they bounce and roll, they accumulate more and more snow until the size of the snow ball reaches a point where it is too heavy for the wind to move it any more. The end result is Snow Rollers. The Snow Rollers that formed in our area varied in size from being as small as a quarter to a few that were the size of a five gallon bucket.
The snow roller in this picture was slightly larger than a five gallon bucket.
